Where Syllogistic Reasoning Happens An Argument for the Extended Mind Hypothesis

چکیده

Does cognition sometimes literally extend into the extraorganismic environment (Clark, 2003), or is it always “merely” environmentally embedded (Rupert, 2004)? Underlying this current border dispute is the question about how to individuate cognitive processes on principled grounds. Based on recent evidence about the active role of representation selection and construction in learning how to reason (Stenning, 2002), I raise the question: what makes two distinct, modality-specific pen-and-paper manipulations of external representations – diagrams versus sentences – cognitive processes of the same kind, e.g. episodes of syllogistic reasoning? In response, I defend a “division of labor” hypothesis, according to which external representations are dependent on perceptually grounded neural representations and mechanisms to guide our behavior; these internal mechanisms, however, are dependent on external representations to have their syllogistic content fixed. Only their joint contributions qualify the extended computational process as an episode of syllogistic reasoning in good standing.

Understanding belief bias by measuring prior beliefs for a Bayesian model of syllogistic reasoning

The phenomenon of belief bias in syllogistic reasoning occurs when the a priori believability of a conclusion influences the intuitive acceptability of that conclusion. Prior beliefs about the world can be formalized into a probabilistic generative model of situations. Tessler and Goodman (2014) proposed that this very idea can account for the range of acceptabilities of conclusions from catego...

All and Only

This paper is a note on a very simple and elementary fact having to do with reasoning about relations. The kinds of reasoning that we have in mind come from two different areas: extended syllogistic logics and description logics. In extended syllogistic logic, one wants to reason about terms formed from binary relations and terms. We illustrate with some examples from the recent paper van Rooij...

Syllogistic Reasoning as a Basis for Combination of Evidence in Expert Systems

In the presence of uncertainty, computation of the certainty factor of a hypothesis requires, in general, the availability of rules for combining evidence under chaining, dis-junction and conjunction. The method described in this paper is based on the use of what may be viewed as a generalization of syllogistic reasoning in classical logic-a generalization in which numerical or, more generally,...

Reconnecting interpretation to reasoning through individual differences.

Computational theories of mind assume that participants interpret information and then reason from those interpretations. Research on interpretation in deductive reasoning has claimed to show that subjects' interpretation of single syllogistic premises in an "immediate inference" task is radically different from their interpretation of pairs of the same premises in syllogistic reasoning tasks (...
